Let Local’s Summer Commence!
For the uninitiated, Local’s Summer is that sweet spot of warm September weather (and water) after all the tourists have officially gone back to school. I love the energy of July and August, but I’m ready to welcome some quiet days and cool nights. Two of my best friends are visiting this weekend and I’m looking forward to enjoying a girls trip stay-cation!
Sunflowers Now Available
Thank you for all the sunflower love! They are a bit of a departure from my typical figurative work, but in looking at their tall, slender bodies, full arm-like leaves, expressive faces and heads full of hair (and some not so full), in many ways still feel like I’m painting a figure. I’ve heard so many beautiful stories about what sunflowers mean to you. For many, they also remind you of a special person in your life - I love that.
Coming Soon: Painting for a Purpose
My daughter’s friend Wren was recently diagnosed with cancer. Her mother Jess is also a friend of mine and long time encourager of my art practice. Our friends sent flowers to the hospital and Jess asked if I would paint them, saying ‘they were so special and I’d love to be able to have something to remind me of this time that is beautiful and not just sad.’ I painted her an original piece, and I’m currently having it photographed to turn into prints.
Later this month (which happens to be childhood cancer awareness month) we will be selling the prints and all the proceeds will be going to their family to help cover the piling expenses that come with having a child hospitalized far from home. Please keep an eye out for that email sharing more information and please share it. We hope this is a nice and beautiful option for people to help but don’t know how. (Yellow also stands for childhood cancer, making the bouquet designed by Two Hands in the Dirt even more perfect).

Scribbles + Notes
Our daughter had her first day of pre-school yesterday and my heart is just bursting for her!! She was amazing. It’s strange having your heart walking outside of your body in the world, I think I’ll be getting used to that feeling forever.
Speaking of school, I just read this fun article by Leandra Medine (aka ManRepeller) ‘What do moms really wear with Raquel Balsam’ and loved every honest bit of it:
I’m starting to get things in motion to design my 2024 calendar! I know! Where does the time go?! Keep your eyes peeled for pre-sale dates coming soon.
If you didn’t know, J.Crew’s new creative director Olympia Gayot is the IT GIRL of the moment (right up there with Taylor, Beyoncé, Greta and Margot of course). She has completely restored the brand to it’s early 90’s glory and I’m here for it. I love following her instagram, and this one too. Lotssss of film photography inspo!
Speaking of J.Crew, this men’s sweater might actually be the perfect oversized, women’s sweater I’m always searching my drawers for. Plus, it’s on sale.
I finally made it to Mae’s swim club and it was glorious. Friends, coffee, donuts and a dip in mama lake, what else can you ask for? She’s hosting more this month on Wednesday mornings, check her Instagram for details.
If you have any questions or just want to say hello, liking this post and sharing a comment really help my newsletter! I’m also always available via email.
Thank you for being here,
Katherine
