Hello friends!
I’m sharing something a bit different today. No updates on my upcoming art collection (more on that soon) but more art adjacent, if you will. That’s right - a peek behind the curtain of this whole mysterious ‘art business’ thing I left my physical therapy career for. I mostly stick to sharing artwork rather than art work, but I recently chatted with one of my all time favorite business mentors (yes, Shanna Skidmore - IYKYK) on her new podcast Consider the Wildflowers, and the least I could do was share our conversation with you.
We discuss my history with art, my career transition (spoiler alert, very slow), what I’ve learned about money, how I’m navigating my business with two young children, the best career advice I’ve received, embarrassing moments(!) and more.
Whether you’re a business owner, a parent with littles at home, or just curious about my career, I hope you leave encouraged and inspired. And if you listen, please leave a note in the comments here with any questions or takeaways. I’d love to continue the conversation!
Podcasts to Nurture Creativity
Now, to know me, is to know that I love podcasts. Monica Padman is friend crush #1 and Dax Shepard may or may not be on my laminated list.
One of the big perks of my job, is that I can listen to podcasts while I work. Last year I started a playlist on my Spotify account titled Nurture Your Creativity, where I regularly add podcasts I find inspiring for both my art practice and art business.
So without further a do, a recent roundup nobody asked for:
Music lovers will recognize his name, but this episode is for everyone. He just came out with a new book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being that I’m reading as soon as I finish Potty Training in 3 Days.
Susan and Ivy are researchers and authors also with a new book out, Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us. The physical therapist in me really nerded out on how they examine art through a scientific lens. I loved learning how dancing helps Alzheimer’s, and how ceramics is one of the best proven activities to keep our brains strong.
I promise I don’t just listen to Armchair Expert. Hillary Kerr hosts Second Life, a tried and true favorite since 2018. She also writes a favorite Substack of mine. She recently interviewed designer and founder Janessa Leoné, whose eponymous line of hats I’ve been coveting for years. I learned that french girls wear baseball caps like “I care, but not enough to do my hair”(validating), and about the importance of regenerative agriculture.
I loved this interview so much! It resonated so deeply. Proud of you!
