An interview with Lori Corden
My Mom, a covetable style icon among her peers, children, and friends of children(!) shares her tips for shopping for and styling art.
Sitting at the Art Table with Lori Corden
I owe so much of my artistic ability and creative passion to my mom. She has her BFA and worked as an art teacher for 27 years ranging in ages preK-12. She was my first art teacher, and now she helps me watch my kids so I can continue painting! I asked her to share her favorite prints in my collection along with her best art shopping/placing tips (she has very covetable taste, iykyk) and this is what she said:
Katherine: How do you approach shopping for art?
Lori: If I really like the painting, I just buy it. I don’t necessarily hang it right away, I lean it against the wall and move it around. Sometimes it just stays leaning layered with a photograph or something. It doesn’t have to stay in one place forever, it can travel.
Katherine: If you were going to hang a large statement piece in your living room, which print would you consider and why?
Lori: I would choose “Summer People”. It’s so interesting to see the way the figures disappear, they look like little memories. I could read a book, look up at the painting again and then return to it and see something else. It’s almost like when you’re in a figure drawing class and you don’t have any paper left but you want to keep drawing so you start layering your gestures. I also think it could go in so many kinds of homes. Even a traditional home. It doesn’t feel so summery to me, maybe because of the colors. And I like the added pastel lines.
Katherine: Do you have any favorite figure drawing prints?
Lori: II, III and V. I own the original of VIII! You can never have too many of these you can put those anywhere. They’re so calming and neutral. They pair well with something colorful.
Katherine: Which subjects do you think would fit best in a kitchen?
Lori: The Sunflowers. And “Through-Lines” would be cool over a table. But kitchens are easy, I feel you can put almost anything in a kitchen.
Katherine: Where do you think people should put art but have never considered it?
Lori: Outside. On a covered porch or screened-in porch. I also like leaning artwork on my kitchen counter, and I just set a bowl of fruit in front of it.
